Seniors 75+ who don’t drive can now ride the MBTA free

The MBTA reported 532 enrollments on day one; the Commonwealth opened the pilot for residents 75 and older on Oct. 13, 2026.

Massachusetts residents 75 and older who no longer drive can now ride the MBTA for free, including the buses, Commuter Rail and ferry that serve Lynn. The MBTA said 532 people signed up on the first day of its Car‑Free Seniors Pilot. (MBTA statement via Lynn Community TV.)

Mass.gov says the statewide enrollment began on October 13, 2026 and is open to residents 75 and older who no longer drive; the pilot covers travel on MBTA services including buses, subway lines, ferries and Commuter Rail. (Mass.gov)

The MBTA explained that participants must have a Massachusetts ID to join and can request the free‑fare credential online. Riders who apply online will receive their credential by mail or may pick it up in person, the agency said.

Seniors may also visit the Charlie Service Center at 296 Washington Street in downtown Boston to get help and a temporary credential the same day; a permanent card will be mailed after that, the MBTA added.

For more on the program and how to apply, the MBTA directs people to MBTA.com and the Registry of Motor Vehicles resources. (MBTA)
