Got a letter about unclaimed money from the state? Here’s how “Claim Mass Money” works
The state Treasury is mailing letters to thousands of residents who can claim unclaimed money online with a claim ID, no paper forms needed. Claiming is always free.
The Massachusetts State Treasury’s Unclaimed Property Division has started sending letters to thousands of residents under a new program called Claim Mass Money. Lynn residents may be among those who get one.
How it works
People who get a letter do not need to search the database or fill out a paper claim. The letter has a unique claim ID; you use it to confirm your information and finish a short online process. The Treasury says eligible claims are approved automatically, with no extra paperwork. The state uses LexisNexis data to match people to the money.
In fiscal year 2026, the Treasury said, 61,358 claims qualified for this fast-track process, totaling about $5.2 million.
How to tell it’s real
- Real letters clearly say they are from the Massachusetts State Treasury and send you to FindMassMoney.gov.
- There is never a fee to claim money directly from the Unclaimed Property Division.
- Be careful with unsolicited requests for personal or financial information, and check them through official Treasury channels.
