Lynn schools warn translation work could be delayed and cost more

The Daily Item reported district leaders say new state rules and guidance could slow translations and add about $4 million a year to the budget.

Lynn Public Schools could see delays in translating documents and may face roughly $4 million in extra annual costs because of upcoming state guidance, The Daily Item reported.

State education officials have put forward a regulation numbered 603 CMR 57.00 that addresses interpretation and translation in schools, the state education department said. Separate state guidance on language access tells agencies to assess language needs, build language access plans and allows phased rollouts when budget limits make immediate full compliance impractical, according to Mass.gov.

The district posts information for families about translation and interpretation on its website, along with documents about bilingual or biliterate staff stipends and qualifications and central office contact details, according to Lynn Public Schools online resources.
